About me and my therapy practice

Have you turned to alcohol, drugs (prescription or illegal), food, shopping, etc, in an attempt to deal with difficult feelings? Has the way you have dealt with your difficulties become part of the problem? You may find yourself thinking 'there has to be more to life than this', but you keep making poor decisions and you feel unable to change. I understand what its like to feel lonely, afraid and like you don't know where you belong. If you are sick and tired of feeling this way I can help you to get 'unstuck' and find a different way forward in your life.

I can help you to;

  • Recover from use of unhealthy coping strategies (addictive behaviours or substance misuse) and develop new, healthy ways to dealing with life.
  • Work on behaviours or ways of relating to others that cause you problems.
  • Understand the reasons behind your difficulties, and develop practical strategies that work for you.

I use a variety of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, EMDR (a treatment for trauma), Solution-Focussed Brief Therapy to help you move on from your present difficulties. I work to high professional standards, providing complete confidentiality and privacy for my clients. In working with me you will not feel judged and your goals will be the focus of our work together. We can work online together using Zoom, or I have some availability for face to face sessions in Middlesbrough.

Practice description

Working with addictions...

I am passionate about working with people struggling with addictions, or who are worried that their use of substances or behaviours has become out of hand. I believe in the importance of understanding what drives you to use these coping mechanisms and helping you to find new ways to deal with emotions.

Support for family members of those affected by addictions...

I understand that you can feel very much alone if you have a loved one struggling with addictions and I am here to support you, whilst you are supporting them.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an Integrative Therapist, using EMDR, Psychodynamic, CBT, Solution Focussed approaches, all underpinned by Person-Centred principles. I have worked as a therapist full-time since qualifying.  I have extensive experience of working with individuals around all issues and I specialise in therapy with clients experiencing difficulties such as addictions, abuse and trauma.

My Supervision training was with Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy, taught by Bob Cooke, and used the Seven Eyed Model of Supervision (Hawkins and Shoet, 1989) and the IDM Developmental Model of Supervision (Erskine, Delworth and Stoltenburg).

Prior to training as a therapist I worked as a Manager in Children's Services, supervising Family Support Workers and I also bring this experience, ensuring that safe and ethical practice underpins all considerations.

Practice description

I work to high professional standards and I bring my experience of integrating various therapeutic approaches to my work with supervisees. I understand that working as a therapist is emotionally demanding and I provide supervision that is nurturing and supportive, whilst allowing for challenge. My approach is non-judgemental, empathic and focussed on empowering you to be the most effective therapist that you can be, ensuring good life/work balance. I offer appointments online (using Zoom) at flexible times so that you can access the support that I can provide from the comfort of your own home.

My key areas of interest are addictions, abuse, including domestic abuse, and childhood trauma. I work to the BACP Code of Ethics for the Counselling Professions and in accordance with this I have regular clinical supervision for all my work.

My first session

In your first session, we will get to know each other and I will ask you about the way you like to work.

Sessions can be either 1 hour (£50) or 1.5 hours (£75).

All Supervision sessions are online and Zoom is my preferred platform.

Please drop me an email and we can arrange an initial telephone consultation to see if we would be a good fit.
