About me and my therapy practice
I offer affordable one-to-one therapy online, either short-term or open-ended, depending on the needs of the client.
Many of us are facing extremely difficult circumstances and are under intense strain due to the global pandemic. That is why I believe it is important to be able to offer affordable therapy online to make it more accessible to those who need it.
Research on videoconferencing counselling is positive, suggesting that it is effective for a wide range of issues and achieves similar clinical outcomes to traditional face-to-face psychotherapy (Simpson, 2009; Backhaus et al., 2012). .
Both clients and therapists often prefer the idea of face-to-face therapy but clients who have engaged in online therapies express similar satisfaction as those experiencing face -to-face (BACP, 2020) .
One key difference is that it is incumbent upon the client to have a confidential space where they will not be disturbed for the duration of the sessions. This can sometimes be difficult in busy households.
A practical benefit is that it saves time and expense with regards to travel and room hire, which makes it a potentially more affordable and convenient way of accessing therapy - especially at times when face-to-face contact is limited due to continuing COVID restrictions.
I am trained in the major schools of thought in psychotherapy and draw on a variety of perspectives. The primary focus of my approach, however, is Existential Therapy.
Existential therapy is an inquiry into what it is to live a meaningful life. Sessions will last an hour and will involve a sensitive, exploratory dialogue into your current experience. Having the undivided attention of a trained professional helps people to articulate and clarify their experience by allowing them the space to talk without fear of judgement.
This process of clarification helps to disclose where we are experiencing tensions between who we are, who we want to be - that is what we value - and how we are being in the world. This is achieved by tuning in to our emotional responses to our experience, listening to the wisdom of our body and learning about how we can live in greater harmony with who we are as a whole.
Existential therapy is not a quick-fix method, although people can experience considerable relief from distress in the early sessions. I aim to cultivate a trusting therapeutic relationship that can last as long as a person needs. Some people choose to engage with therapy in the short-term (between 6-20 sessions), others choose to continue for the long-term as it becomes a valuable part of their lives - it all depends on individual circumstances.
My first session
I offer a free consultation session to assess whether I can provide the help you require at the present time. This gives us the opportunity to explore your present circumstances and relevant history in order to understand the nature of your concerns. It also gives us the opportunity to discuss your expectations and desired outcomes of therapy - as well as ongoing availability - to see whether we will be able to develop a beneficial therapeutic relationship together.
