I keep the Jewish Sabbath, so I am not available from Friday evenings to Saturday evenings.
About me and my therapy practice
I work in a peaceful ground-floor room near Alexandra Palace, or, while the pandemic lasts, on Zoom in a quiet room upstairs. I provide plenty of time for you to explain who you are and what you are finding difficult. Then we work on two levels. One is verbal, when I ask questions and use my experience to enable us both to get a better understanding of your situation, and what choices are open to you, so that you can consider how to make changes. The other level is non-verbal, a silent exchange between us that seems to be healing.
I usually see clients who come voluntarily for open-ended psychotherapy. They are free to end whenever they choose. Individual sessions are for fifty minutes, and couple sessions are for seventy-five.
My understanding has come from my reading and studying on courses - yet most of all from being mother to my children. I saw then how very intelligent and sensitive we all are as children, and how easily we can be hurt and withdraw. Many of the 'stuck' positions in which we find ourselves as adults can be traced to desperate choices that we made when we were younger. Recognising these choices can enable us to see new possibilities, with more energy and a sense of freedom.
My first session
I usually start by asking whether you have had psychotherapy before. Then I listen while you start to tell me about yourself. Some people welcome this opportunity and find that hearing themselves speak while I listen is helpful. Other people feel daunted by the expectation that they should talk. So then we start by my asking very simple questions that I hope make it easier for us to get to know one another. Whichever way the beginning takes shape, my hope is that we end your first session with you feeling a little more connected to yourself than you did when we started.
