About me and my therapy practice
Welcome!
I am an experienced, well qualified, caring counsellor and nature-based therapist who is passionate about working with young people and adults who are at a cross roads in their lives. I enjoy working with clients who are keen to make changes in their lives - for example, those wishing to improve their personal and working lives; find direction and focus in their studies/careers; become more creative, calm and joyful.
I aim to tailor my approach to meet the individual needs of my clients and draw on many years of successful counselling work with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, health concerns, loss, work problems, relationship and family issues.
Counselling sessions mainly takes place Carmarthen and Narberth. I also work outdoors with clients offering nature-based therapies in a variety of locations, including near Carmarthen and Narberth. "Walk and Talk" sessions can take place in nature reserves, parks, or the beach on agreement between us.
My core approach to counselling comes from person-centred therapy training at postgraduate level. Where appropriate, I use my knowledge as a psychology graduate, skills from CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Additionally I have experience of family systems work acquired whilst working in the NHS as a member of a multi-disciplinary community mental health team. Solution-focused therapy and mindfulness training also feature in my toolkit.
My counselling with clients is informed by my wider experience of working in health, education and outdoor settings. I have worked in forest school, outdoor leader work and horticultural therapy and enjoy making artwork, gardening. I hold a Masters degree in Wild Writing - creative writing on nature combined with academic study of environmental issues. If you wish I can include creative activities in my counselling work with you.
I welcome enquiries about my counselling service and look forward to hearing from you.
Practice description
In our counselling sessions I will offer you support and encouragement whilst you express what is going on for you and then help you identify, explore and tap into your existing personal strengths and resources to improve your situation. In addition I can offer assistance in learning and practising new skills which may help with your situation.
You can get in touch with me to discuss starting counselling and ask any questions you might have. Let me know if you have any health, communication or access needs so that I can, if at all possible, accommodate these. If you decide to book an initial appointment you can tell me more about your situation and we can explore the possibilities of working together.
I usually work with clients on a short-term basis, for 6 to 10 weekly sessions. However, if further sessions are requested I can work longer term as needed.
My first session
Sometimes in the first session clients just need to start to tell me what is going on for them. And this is OK!
I will generally have spoken with you about practical arrangements before a session. My assessment process is usually informal and done whilst listening to you. In addition I may ask you questions about particular areas of your life that are relevant. I keep form filling to a minimum. If we decide to work together on an ongoing basis it is usually helpful for us to agree on an initial number of sessions and a regular weekly time to meet.
During the first session I will give you more detailed written information about my counselling practice and a short agreement to fill in regarding contact details and other information relevant to the counselling process.
