About me and my therapy practice
Hi, my name is Karen. I am a fully qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist. I have been working with children, young people and families for many years. I have a great deal of experience working with children who are experiencing a wide range of different emotional, social, and psychological difficulties; including but not exclusive to anxiety/panic symptoms, self-injury/addictive/self-destructive behaviours, depression/mood difficulties, sexual behaviour or identity concerns and social anxiety/withdrawal.
It is important to find someone who feels like a good fit for you, your child or your family, so please do get in touch for a free consultation and we can explore what treatment options might be suitable for your child and family.
I trained at the Tavistock & Portman Clinic in London and my foundation theory is psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, however, I feel that when it comes to technique this depends upon the child, young person, or family. Sometimes families are just looking for some short term advice and guidance. A space for thinking about what might be going on and how they can make changes to support their child. On other occasions a more long-term weekly appointment is necessary.
The principles of psychodynamic therapy are applied through weekly sessions each week at the same time, and the same location, with breaks for school holidays.
Essentially, psychodynamic theory states that often the root of emotional or psychological difficulties can be understood by examining the past, particularly early relationships. Contemporary relational theory however can also employ techniques from other useful approaches.
My first session
Before starting work, I suggest that we have a free telephone conversation to explore what it is that you are hoping to work on and whether my approach is right for you. We can then decide whether to proceed to an initial session. Currently, I am seeing clients in person or remotely via Zoom.
In brief, time-limited work, I prefer to meet with the parent/carer for a minimum of two sessions at the start to get a full history.
