About me and my therapy practice
My name is Lucy Sumner and as a fully qualified MBACP integrative counsellor working with adults. My training as an Integrative Counsellor began in 2014. For me this included CBT, psychodynamic and person centred therapies. The advantage of this training is that I can tailor our sessions by using the therapy/therapies that suits you best. I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) who are the principal professional body for counselling.
When I was training to be a therapist, I attended hours of mandatory therapy myself. This helped to deepen my understanding of the counselling process and the importance of the relationship between a therapist and a client. Therapy enabled me to work through my own life experiences, I understand from the inside, the value of investing in personal therapy with a well trained and experienced professional.
I have public and professional liability insurance, and an enhanced disclosure and barring service clearance (DBS). I volunteer at a counselling charity and regularly attend training courses on a wide range of subjects which are relevant to the field. I am constantly seeking to improve my depth of knowledge through further training to be of benefit to my clients.
I have helped people understand troubling thoughts and feelings such as depression, anxiety, OCD and self harm. My specialist areas are infertility, miscarriage, grief, loss and health anxiety. I am passionate about what I do and feel privileged that people trust me with feelings and emotions they may never have spoken to someone else about.
I can help you to explore issues that cause you distress and help you cope with life’s challenges. I will provide a safe space and support you without judgement or criticism in which you can express your difficult feelings. Together we can look at things from a fresh perspective and unpick the things that you are struggling with which will help you become more self-aware to enable you to make informed choices and feel more in control.
I won’t tell you what to do, but will guide you, I will listen to you carefully to ensure I understand your feelings and experiences, you know them best. When we share this understanding, together we can find a way forward.
My first session
Finding the right counsellor is a personal choice and you need to find one that you feel you can be open with, therefore I offer a free 30 minute call to see if I am the right person for you.
Following this, the sessions will all be 50 minutes, with every 6th session being a review. This allows us to discuss your progression and determine if you feel your needs are being met. If you feel they are, and you wish to continue attending therapy, the next review will be following another 6 sessions. I offer short and long term therapy, but if at any point you, or I feel the therapeutic relationship is not working for any reason, or you feel I am not meeting your needs, we can discuss this at any time. I can suggest another form of counselling and sign post you.
