About me and my therapy practice

Your needs and finding the best way of working for you will determine whether I am the right counsellor for you. I firmly believe that counselling is a collaborative endeavour and works best when there is a strong therapy relationship between counsellor and client.

I aim to help clients to feel valued and heard and I believe a lot can be accomplished by skilful listening and responding to clients. As a result, I rarely give direct advice although I might signpost clients to other sources of help and to psycho-educative and well-being resources.

My approach to counselling is integrative with a strong foundation in Person Centred and Experiential therapy. I have also completed trainings in Mindfulness, CBT skills and working with eating disorders.

Practice description

I qualified as a counsellor in 2004 and have a Master's in Counselling from the University of East Anglia. I am a Senior Accredited member of BACP and have been accredited since 2007. I am also a qualified supervisor and lecturer in counselling and psychotherapy.

I have substantial experience of working with clients aged 18 and over. In particular, I have 11 years' experience of working with university students. I also have experience of working with clients with chronic illness and workplace stress.

I usually see clients on a weekly basis for 1 hour per week. Other contractual arrangements can be discussed depending on your needs and my availability.

I am located near Birmingham and due to teaching commitments, I am unable to see clients who are also students at Birmingham City University.

My first session

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and for you to find out about how I work. It is also an opportunity for me to understand the nature of your difficulties and to consider whether I am the best person to work with you.

I have a counselling contract which I usually send to clients before the first session. We also discuss this contract in the first session before making a decision about continuing to work together. The first session is also when we would agree a regular time to meet online and finalise payment arrangements.

Availability

I am currently seeing clients and supervisees online via Zoom. I will have availability for sessions from w/c 26th April, 2021.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an integrative supervisor of individuals and groups. I work from a predominantly Person Centred and Experiential foundation and have also completed trainings in Mindfulness, CBT skills and eating disorders.

I take a strongly collaborative approach to supervision and believe that a good supervisory relationship is vital to the work of all counsellors. I use a context based approach to supervision,  informed by the BACP Ethical Framework. I use a relational approach which looks at the supervisee, client, supervisor triad to inform practice and to understand process in supervision and therapy.

Practice description

I qualified as a counsellor in 2004 and have a Master's in Counselling from the University of East Anglia where I worked from 2006 - 2015 as Educational Counsellor and subsequently Deputy Director of the University Counselling Service.

I have been supervising trainee counsellors and psychotherapists since 2006. From 2015, I also started supervising qualified therapists and groups. I have a Diploma in Integrative Supervision of Individuals and Groups from The Grove Practice, London and I am a senior accredited member of BACP. I am also a lecturer in counselling and psychotherapy and provide academic supervision for undergraduate and Master's dissertations.

My first session

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and to decide whether we will be a good fit for working together.

I use a supervision contract which I send to supervisees prior to the first session. We will discuss the contract and any other contractual issues (times, frequency, payment) in the first session. If you are a trainee counsellor, we will also discuss any administrative requirements of me as your supervisor.

Please note, due to teaching commitments, I am unable to privately supervise students from Birmingham City University.
