About me and my therapy practice
Counselling is an investment in ourselves, with my role being to support you through a difficult time, or a juncture in life where you feel the need for change.
With experience of short-term counselling (6 - 8 sessions) and longer-term therapy across various respected organisations and charities, I offer skills and support in finding a way forward for those of us struggling with issues such as depression, generalised anxiety disorder, stress, low self-esteem and relationship problems.
Having said this, I appreciate the decision to share our personal difficulties can make us feel incredibly vulnerable and require a great deal of courage. With this in mind, I offer a calm, stable and unbiased environment, where we can work at a pace that respects your readiness to share.
Working considerately and confidentially
From a discreet location in St Neots town centre, my work is underpinned by the standards and principles of the BACP Ethical Framework for Counselling and Psychotherapy, a code to ensure clients receive the safety, standards and service they deserve. High on this list, is the protection of your confidentiality; your trust in me being the foundation for a fruitful counsellor-client relationship.
Working with young people (11 years +)
Through my previous profession as a school teacher and experience as a youth counsellor, I have developed a sound appreciation of the worries a young person can experience, including those related to cyber-bullying, social media and internet content. Helping a young person to explore their difficulties, evaluate their options and come to their own decision is the cornerstone of my approach; something that can empower and foster independence long after our work has finished.
In line with current advice, I have now moved to providing my service through the following mediums:
Skype / WhatsApp Counselling
Online face-to-face therapy allows us to work towards your goals from the comfort of your own home or from wherever is most convenient. As always, your privacy remains of paramount importance and all sessions are conducted from the privacy of my practise room.
Instant messaging Counselling
This discreet method of working (through Skype Chat or WhatsApp) allows us to exchange instant messages for the length of the session. Much like telephone counselling, this method of therapy really comes into its own on those occasions when the prospect of working face-to-face may feel a little too intense.
This is a well-established aspect of my practice and, coupled with experience as a listener and trainer for the Samaritans, I am well positioned to deliver safe and effective sessions through this medium. All sessions are conducted from the privacy of my practise room.
Therapy through e-mail allows you to put down your thoughts (up to 1000 words) at a time of your choosing. After careful and considered thought, I would then respond to your e-mail within 48 hours. An exchange between us would be the equivalent of one counselling session.
My first session
Initially we would look at what's troubling you the most and how it's impacting your life. This is key, as from here we would look to identify some realistic and meaningful goals to help you work with or through something. Working towards these goals, would then become the focus of our sessions together.
