How I work
The difference attentive and empathic listening can make to a client's self understanding and to their symptoms can be life changing!
Therapy for me is really about the working relationship, the emotional bond we have and if that feels supportive and safe then many positive changes can and do happen.
Clients sometimes work with me on a medium or long term basis depending on the issues. I can offer a free initial telephone call and then set up a consultation, if you wish, for you to tell me in more detail about your issues and how we can work together to reduce and overcome them.
It’s important to look at present difficulties with awareness of the past and the imprint it can leave. I like to work on exploring & processing your past, childhood & significant relationships especially growing up how that may impact & influence your mental states, current relationships & what patterns you may have noticed and how they’re affecting you now.
I’m also interested in you in the therapeutic space with me and how we interact. What feelings and thoughts come up interacting with me and can you share these?
I like to work relationally to understand you from inside your lived experience and share that with you and how your personal relational context is very significant for your mental health. Relationships with others-How do others see me? Am I good enough? Am I worth something? When the answers aren't good, you may feel bad about yourself and this can wear you down.
I cannot tell you what to do or advice you. It is about being together and exploring your experiences, thoughts, feelings, & desires, giving them the time and attention they deserve which can be difficult but definitely worthwhile for lasting positive change.
I have worked with clients with issues like social isolation, self alienation, addictions, depression, anxiety, sexual abuse, low self worth, loss and bereavement, relationship break-ups/ difficulties, work/life balance and work related problems. My approach is integrative which means I can work with many different approaches to find the best way that suits you.
My first session
In our first session I like to do an assessment with clients. This involves asking clients what the problems are from their perspective, and what they might need from therapy. It’s also a chance for you to see me, size me up & develop opinions on what it might be like to work with me and ask questions on how therapy might help them.
