About me and my therapy practice

As a relationally orientated therapist, I help clients integrate past and present psychological difficulties through the use of the therapeutic relationship. Since we are unable to stop feeling, the therapeutic work with me is about allowing, accepting, and understanding feelings. Through this creative, immersive, and reflective, co-created process, healthier ways of being and relating are achieved.

With many years of experience supporting a widely diverse range of clients and colleagues it has been my experience that if a safe and authentic relationship can be established, the foundation of change is achieved. This aligns with the, now well know common factor, across therapeutic modalities:

it is the quality of the therapeutic relationship that is the most significant predictor of outcome

I am particularly interested in supporting individuals affected by developmental trauma. This includes helping individuals who have been exposed to severe childhood abuse, through supporting those impacted by the challenges inherent in all experiences of navigating our earliest relationships.

With an interest and professional background in physical health as a squash coach, a career in mental health, and other influences, I am guided by scientific and philosophical principles underlined by non-dualism. This supports my holistic approach to therapy. This approach emphasises the centrality of compassion toward self and others, often damaged and requiring help to rebuild, as laying at the core of authentic and successful living and central to the healing process.

Practice description

I am a qualified Supervisor, Psychotherapist, and Counsellor with over 20 years of experience working within the caring profession; supporting adults, young people, and families, within mental health, social care, youth justice, and substance misuse services.

I have worked in secure settings supporting those with severe mental illness. This has had a profound effect on my depth of understanding regarding the human condition and the ways in which extreme stress and trauma influence the mind.

I started my psychotherapy work in 2012. Initially working within organisations, I progressed to private practice in 2015. Alongside my private work, from 2016 to 2018, I team led an NHS IAPT service in London. In 2019 I trained as a supervisor and worked from 2019 to early 2021 as a group supervisor for therapists working in the NHS and in low-cost services. I supervise therapists in private practice. In 2021 I founded The Brixton Practice Counselling and Psychotherapy Service.

Prior to working as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I worked for Surrey and then Richmond children’s services, supporting children, adolescents, and families in need of social and mental health care.

I am registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) whose code of ethics I abide by.

My first session

As a relational-orientated therapist, the main aim of the first session with me is to see if we might be a good match to work together. I do not complete any formal assessment but rather I like initial sessions to unfold organically with no set agenda.

Typically, after checking in with you about any questions you might have for me, I will ask you to talk about how you are and what has brought you to therapy. I will respond with any questions, thoughts, and feelings that occur to me. Through this process, I will be able to get to know you a little bit and you will get an experience of me and my therapeutic approach.

Sometimes clients know straight away that the match feels good and like to book in for further sessions. Other times clients like to reflect on the experience before making any decisions.

I do not charge for initial sessions as I believe it is important for clients to have the opportunity to meet with different therapists before making any financial commitments.
