About me and my therapy practice

Life has been really tough these past few years hasn't it?

It almost feels difficult, to know where to start and that's okay.

My own experience of counselling, is what inspired me to train as a therapist, so I welcome you, exactly as you are.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by what is going on in your life right now, but know you want to talk to someone, here are some prompts to give you a little helping hand:

  • Maybe you are here because you are sick of not feeling good enough?

or

  • Maybe since the pandemic, you have made a conscious decision to put yourself first but can't quite shake off feeling guilty when doing so.

  • Have family interactions always been a challenge for you? Leaving you feeling angry and/or invisible. Maybe they are the reason you like to please others.

If you second guess yourself or prefer to please other people, then I am here to help you build a better relationship with yourself, so you no longer feel powerless in your own life.

Maybe you need help with creating boundaries or learning to say no.

Therapy with me can sometimes feel like meeting a close and trusted friend who wants to hear about all the problems you are facing.

Except, we will ideally go deeper than that, as in order for change to happen, we must.

Practice description

I believe the one good thing that came out of the pandemic was the rise in Online therapy. I use a video platform called Zoom, which you may have already heard of or even used!

The beauty of online therapy, is being in the sanctuary of your own home, there's nothing quite like sitting in comfortable pyjamas, with your dog or cat next to you, a cup of tea, a big armchair, warm blanket and no public transport.

We will meet on the same day at the same time each week or every other, if that's what you would prefer, to provide consistency in our relationship and the work that we do together.

My first session

I understand that committing to therapy takes courage. I offer a free 20 minute telephone call so that you can see if we are a good fit and whether our schedules match*.

* There's no obligation to enter therapy with me, if at the end of our chat, you decide I am not the right therapist, I am more than happy to make recommendations.

This is your therapy, so you can choose to work with me weekly or fortnightly, but I wouldn't recommend going any longer than this.

About me and my therapy practice

Being a parent or carer can feel overwhelming at times. All you want is for your child to be happy, so it can be difficult to see them struggle. As much as you want to be the person who they can come to, to "fix" their worries, this isn't always possible.

Having a safe space to talk through their concerns away from home and school life, can help them understand their emotions better.

Prior to starting my private practice, I worked for my local young people's charity, providing 1-1 counselling on a 6 sessional basis. The issues I have worked with include: anxiety, low mood, bereavement, family breakdown, parental divorce/separation, self harm, suicidal thoughts, abandonment and bullying.

I have continued to work with young people in my current job, which I manage alongside my seeing clients privately. This job is with my local hospital, where I support young people and families pre and post bereavement.

Practice description

I like to work at a gentle pace with young people, to help them feel at ease when talking to me.

The methods I use in sessions will depend on your child’s age, situation and development. I often use creative activities and games as it can take away the intensity of being 1-1, but to also help encourage your child to express their feelings better.

Reading stories and talking about the feelings of a specific character can help them understand the emotion and, in turn, encourage them to discuss their own feelings, while drawing, painting or drama can help the child express themselves better.

Older children may prefer talking therapy, or a mixture of both but this is ultimately down to your child. Your child and I will discuss the situation together so we can learn what method will be most beneficial for them.

Although different methods may be used for child counselling, the aim of counselling for both children and adults is the same; to help the individual cope better with their feelings and to enjoy life again.

My first session

Prior to commencing our first session together, I will invite you and your young person to complete an assessment with me.

The aim of this session is to obtain basic information and to establish any issues your young person is facing.

Your young person will be given the option of having an adult present with them, when this happens. However, from experience, they usually like someone to be with them, until they become familiar with me and their environment.

This session will last for 50 minutes and be at my usual sessional rate of £60.
