About me and my therapy practice
The name of Quietude Counselling comes from a poem by Rupert Brooke “I have a need to busy my heart with quietude”. The line struck a chord with me many years ago when stressed during exams and it has stayed with me. I think many of us yearn to feel this quiet calm in our lives and relationships and struggle to find it, especially in the very stressful times we have experienced over the last couple of years.
My aim as founder of Quietude Counselling is to help you work towards your goals so that you can experience your own life the way you want to.
It could be you struggle with anxiety, depression or relationship issues. Or maybe you want to do away with those negative messages you know you sometimes give yourself so you can become a more confident person to achieve your goals in life. Counselling can help you manage and minimise those issues.
Research shows that human connectivity is one of the key factors in life satisfaction, health and happiness, but few of us have ever been taught how to manage relationships and communication effectively. I will help you look at how you communicate with your loved ones, whether that is adult children, parents, friends or romantic relationships and how past relationship patterns may be adversely affecting your present relationships.
I am fully qualified and and work with both individuals and couples. I work in an integrative style using humanistic, deep listening techniques combined with some Gestalt work, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Transactional Analysis. This means I will use whatever I think will help you most in your current situation.
I work from my private practice situated between Torquay and Paignton and am also happy to run zoom or telephone counselling sessions.
If you come to counselling with me, we will start by looking at what you hope to achieve from counselling. I will always be guided by what you need just now, whether that is a caring listener, or someone who can challenge you to change your existing beliefs that may no longer be working in your best interests. I will be alongside you in your pain and difficulties. If you are stuck I will help you find ways to move. If you feel paralysed by anxiety, I will help you find ways to manage your anxiety so that it no longer feels overwhelming.
I am happy to work with "one off" counselling sessions if you just feel the need to discuss a particular issue. A single therapy session can still be enormously helpful and can resolve an issue. I recommend booking a 1.5 hour session for this and be aware that it may bring other issues to light that are not resolved in the session.
I am passionate about relationship counselling. So many of us create relationships hoping for so much, but with no skills having been given to us to manage anything that goes wrong. And almost all relationships have difficulties at some point. I will show you how to have difficult discussions without conflict. How to truly listen to and understand each other. How to start meeting each other's needs and so have our own needs met. How to bring fun and interest back into your relationship, and sometimes, if necessary, how to bring a relationship to an end with as little pain as possible.
If you are looking for relationship counselling then I will start by looking at how you both feel about your relationship, what may have changed, and what your current reason for seeking counselling is. I work with each partner equally, my role is to help you achieve a more harmonious relationship, not to decide who is right or wrong. I work with same sex relationships and I am happy to work with non-normative relationships such as polyamory.
My first session
I can offer a 15 minute free phone call initially for you to ask questions and get a sense of who I am and how I might be able to help you.
Our first face to face session will be paid at the usual session rate. I will look at what you hope counselling will help you achieve in your life and what you are currently struggling with.
