About me and my therapy practice
Are you struggling and/or feeling anxious about integrating into a new community, new job and/or new environment? Or, you may be struggling to 'find' yourself in a new culture or community. I understand the anxiety that relocating and reintegrating into a new culture and community can cause. It can be a challenge to navigate and settle into your new life after you relocate or even simply change jobs to work with new people in a new environment.
A change in situations and circumstances can put a strain in our relationships and sometimes lead to depression and anxiety. If you are having a challenging time adjusting to a new, social environment or situation, I can support you to recognise your potential, grow in confidence and self-esteem and navigate into the new life you wish for yourself. I'll help you understand that you have the power within you to flourish in a new environment.
I offer a non-judgmental Counselling service that provides you with the space to connect and create new comfortable ways of 'be-ing' and 'do-ing'; a relaxed space to gently explore your options and mindfully think of essential ways to cope with the changes in and around you. Although I emphasise the importance of a holistic approach to Counselling I use Transactional Analysis (TA) as my main modality to understand and facilitate your navigation through life changes.
I am a qualified TA Counsellor. I work and abide by the BACP ethical principles. I also abide by TA’s main concepts and principles that emphasises that: Every individual human being is worthy, valued and dignified; that we all have the capacity to think and decide what we want from life and that such decisions are made consciously or unconsciously which means we can change and make better decisions as we become better informed and aware.
By asking questions, I use a coaching, non-directive style of counselling that permits the client to recognise and act on their own abilities and skills.
Practice description
I offer online (video) and telephone sessions. In order for you to make the best decision for yourself, I will support you in deciding whether or not engaging in counselling via online or telephone would work for you. I will also support you in deciding which medium best suits your needs.
Transactional Analysis (TA) concepts and theories support the individual to understand themselves in relation to their environment and others. These concepts and theories offer a coherent, tested group of propositions that can be applied by the individual to understand their personality and their social interactions within their community and/or group. They are very apt psychological theories and tools that support my work with clients. During our sessions, the client and I would use the appropriate and applicable theories as a basis to understand the thinking and feeling behind their behaviour.
I believe that when we understand why we think and feel a certain way, it becomes easier to work on our interactions and behaviours.
The idea of therapy can be daunting even for those who have experienced it before. To make it "calming", and less daunting, I walk along with the client, by "going" at their pace. It is important for the client to understand that, as much as we are in a therapeutic alliance, it is all about their process and the steps they need to take to get to where they want to be.
My first session
Contracting plays a big role in TA therapy. The contract between the client and myself starts from our initial appointment when we both think of and agree on, how and if we can work together.
The first session is the “getting to know” session for both the client and myself. It is for contracting and getting information about the client including their reasons for seeking counselling/therapy and the personal goals they intend to achieve by coming in for therapy. It is also the session in which the client decides whether I am a good fit for them and I decide if I am qualified to support the client to achieve their goals.
The initial appointment is also the time when the client and I contract on our individual boundaries, agree on the frequency of the sessions and how we would work together to make the change they want.
As my client, you will expect to be treated as an authority in your own life. You will expect to be listened to and be heard. No one understands the pain, and challenges in your life better than yourself who is living through it. In our sessions, therefore, the client will be guided to find their own answers through understanding themselves and their experiences.
I work in a less-structured way. The client's goals are very important, and it is my believe, that these goals can be achieved with ease if we start by acknowledging and accepting who we are i.e. by being our authentic self moment to moment; that together, we would find the necessary stepping stones for the client to move forward towards their intended goal. Reaching out is usually the first big step towards that goal!
It is also important to know that the client and I will, at the beginning of every session, agree on a goal or what they will like to achieve for that session.
I integrate other modalities, like parts theory and compassionate inquiry as well as life coaching into my practice. These modalities, all tie in very well with TA concepts.
