I am carrying out a research project as part of my Master’s (MSc in Understanding Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse) at Goldsmiths, University of London. My subject area is therapeutic interventions to support adult male survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA).

Male survivors of CSA are an under researched group, and support services for men are lacking. Research into barriers to disclosure of male abuse has increased significantly over the last 10 years but research into supporting men in counselling post-disclosure is still lacking.

I am looking for qualified counsellors or psychotherapists who work with, or have worked with, male CSA survivors to take part in a semi-structured interview lasting about an hour. The interview will be conducted by Zoom and will ask about the therapist’s experience of working with this cohort, both in therapeutic terms, and how they processed the difficulty of responding to trauma-related work.

My study has been approved by the Research Ethics Department at Goldsmiths, University of London. My academic supervisor is Doireann Larkin who can be contacted at d.larkin@gold.ac.uk

Research into this important area will improve understanding of the needs of male CSA survivors, and help more men to come forward and process their trauma. Your time and contribution to this research is greatly appreciated.

Please contact me on morou@gold.ac.uk if you would like to take part, or if you are considering taking part and would like more information on the research.

With thanks,

Michael O’Rourke
